Independence- freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others.

I was running yesterday and thinking about freedom. We are a country who prides ourselves on our freedom, looking at other less free countries and their people with pity.

And yet,

when I think of many people I know, independence, is not the way I would describe them. I look around and see people making small and large decisions based on the voices of the people they are allowing control their lives. Maybe it is people they know, a friend, a teacher, a sibling or maybe someone they don't know personally but they know of, like a movie star, a reality t.v. star, a rock star, an author or just the voice of someone who sounds smart on the internet. These people I know will bend and stretch and change with every whim of those voices that they allow in their lives.

Be thin!

Wear this!

Say this!

Look smart!

Like these things!

Do this!

Think this!

Then there are others, who are, perhaps, free from the control and influence of other people but enslaved by things

Their own importance

I could go on and on. With our freedom we have allowed ourselves to become enslaved by it. We are free to do almost whatever we want. We are free to think whatever we want. We are free to say almost anything we want. We are free to write, free to go, free to stay, free to

whatever we want. And for some reason, many times, we choose to BE dependent, enslaved and controlled.

There is only one dependence that gives freedom

Timothy Keller says it like this,

"What is the environment that liberates us if we confine ourselves to it? Love. Love is the most liberating freedom-loss of all."

The source of the greatest, most perfect love, Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:14 says

"The love of Christ constrains us..."

I celebrate this, most liberating, freedom-loss.
